Are You a Nerd?

I enjoy travelling when I’m not working; my husband and I have been to many places all across the world. His parents live in Europe, so we go to Germany to see them and while there we always go to see another thing or two.

This summer we’re going on vacation to Italy and of course to Germany. We’re really looking forward to the time away and all the amazing things we’ll see and all the wines that we will get to drink.

We have also spent some time in South America; we’ve been to Peru and have hiked the Inca Trail to Machu Pichu. This is a four-day, 26-mile hike with the highest point a pass at 14,000 feet. There are porters who carry your gear so all you have to carry is your Chapstick and your camera. It is a long walk but it is very beautiful and very secluded. My favorite part of the walk was on the very first night in our tent, high in the mountains — looking up in the sky and for a moment wondering what the fog was... there wasn’t a cloud in the sky but there did seem to be fog. What was that? It was the Milky Way! It was incredible how clear the sky and vivid the stars were.

We also visited Iguazu Falls, which is where Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina come together. It is a beautiful waterfall that is just amazing.

Traveling around the world really broadens your perspectives. We take our kids with us; they have always been good travellers and it really opens our eyes to how fortunate we are and how different people around the world live.

We don’t stay in five-star hotels; rather; we go by train, carry backpacks, and stay in youth hostels. We like to experience local foods (and wines), the local culture and try and get a glimpse of how other people live.

A couple of years ago my husband and I got certified to scuba dive, and that has opened up a whole new avenue of vacations for us. We have done dive vacations to Honduras, Trinidad, the Eastern Caribbean and Mexico. We have seen amazing nature and have met some very interesting people.

We have been so fortunate to be able to travel and see the world. This is something that everyone should experience; it is truly a blessing.
