PBGC Announces New Inspector General Appointment

Government Affairs

The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) on Feb. 17 announced the appointment of Nicholas J. Novak as the agency’s Inspector General.

Novak served as the PBGC’s Acting Inspector General since April 2020. He also spent nearly 20 years in the PBGC’s Office of the Inspector General and its Office of Negotiations and Restructuring; at the latter, he supervised aspects of the Multiemployer Pension Insurance Program. Novak also has worked at the U.S. Department of Justice, the Department of Health and Human Services, the IRS and the Government Publishing Office; he has worked in the private sector as well.

In his new role, Novak will continue to oversee independent audits and investigations, provide guidance to improve the agency’s business practices and execute procedures to prevent and detect fraud. He will report directly to the PBGC’s Board of Directors and to Congress.

PBGC Director Gordon Hartogensis in a press release expressed confidence in Novak. “I know that Nick shares my commitment to ensuring PBGC and everyone at the agency operate ethically and effectively,” he said, adding that he looks forward “to continuing our work together as he takes on the role of Inspector General.”
